I teach on Zoom, Skype, Facetime, and Facebook Messenger and accept Zelle and PayPal.

Prior to the pandemic I had been offering lessons via Skype and Facetime, etc, for five years, so I have experience teaching this way. Obviously an online lesson is different than being together in person, but I have been amazed with how much my students have improved working virtually. Since I do not have to pay for the price of a studio my rates are lower for online lessons.

Bass Matthew Anchel is a professional opera singer based in New York City. In addition to four seasons on the roster of the Metropolitan Opera, he has sung engagements with Los Angeles Opera, Staatsoper Stuttgart, Glyndebourne, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Oper Leipzig, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Knoxville Opera, Opera San Antonio, Caramoor Music Festival, St. Petersburg Opera, Carnegie Hall, and Opera San Jose. He has been called "A voice to watch," by the Wall Street Journal and "Engagingly funny and mind-bogglingly virtuosic," by the LA Times. He is the winner of numerous singing prizes and awards including being a Grand Finalist in The Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Mr. Anchel is a pupil of renowned voice teacher Patricia McCaffrey, who encouraged him to open his own teaching studio in 2011. He passes on what his teacher has taught him, while adding his own touch and personal experiences as a young singer. His students include opera singers who perform in houses around the world, actors who perform on Broadway, Off-Broadway and regionally, pop singers, and beginners who are learning to sing for the first time. He also has years of experience teaching children, both privately and with Campus Kids, a summer camp, where he was musical director and staging director for four years. Mr. Anchel's experience and understanding of differentiating styles allows him to teach in any genre.

Testimonials

  • "Matthew Anchel is a brilliant master teacher.  He has helped me in myriad genres including broadway, bel canto opera, art song and 21st century opera.  Since I've begun working with Matthew, my range has increased, my breath support has strengthened, and my tone has blossomed.  Colleagues have noticed the difference in my singing, and I give Matt credit for helping me to develop a more secure, reliable technique.  He is incredibly knowledgable about the physiology and functionality of the vocal process, and he has a wonderful voice for demonstrating whatever he's conveying to his students.  He pushes me to succeed, but he's always patient and encouraging. Try a lesson.  You'll be shocked and thrilled with the results." - Jonathan Blalock, Tenor (Dallas Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Washington National Opera)

  • "For a career on the Musical Theatre stage, to Operetta and Opera, I was in need of a voice teacher that excelled in every genre. I hit the lottery with Matthew Anchel! Matthew creates an encouraging environment, where he can successfully contour each lesson to each individual student’s needs. Every lesson, I can see the difference his vast knowledge in technique and varying musical genres is making in my voice. From belting to sustaining multiple High C’s eight times a week, Matthew has elevated my voice to a place where I feel ready to compete at the highest levels as a crossover performer. If his own gorgeous instrument, and incredible teaching talents weren’t enough, his charming demeanor allows every student to laugh, and live their passion for singing in each and every lesson!! I could not recommend Matthew highly enough!!!" - Natalie Ballenger (Beauty and the Beast International Tour, West Side Story International Tour, Lotte Lenya Winner)

  • "After studying voice for 15 years intensely, I have never had a teacher who has directly shown me how to take hold over my technique before Matthew Anchel.  Previous teachers have worked on technique without any explanation as to what they were doing or how my voice actually worked, and this left me ill-prepared to maintain my technique when out on gigs.  Matt has changed all of this, and I could not be more grateful.  Matt has a masterful ear for technique and an unrelenting goal to make singers the best they can be, and more importantly, he helps prepare us as singers to go out into the world having a grasp on our technique.  Matt is such a supportive teacher, showing humanity, humor, and kindness in every moment.  I leave lessons with Matt feeling energized and excited about my singing.  - Margaret Dudley, Soprano (Orchestra of St. Luke's, Colorado Symphony, American Symphony Orchestra, Bard Festival, New York City Opera)

  • "Even though I had found early success in Young Artist Programs, I reached my late 20s without a firm technical base. In my first lesson, Matt immediately recognized my problem spots, diagnosed the causes, and gave me exercises and warm ups that would retool my voice to be cleaner, louder, and more secure. The technique that Matt has taught me made my top more secure and increased my range on the bottom.  People who had known me for many years commented on how my voice grew in size - after just two lessons. Matt is a delightful person, and a masterful teacher. I have studied with many of the big name teachers in NYC, but Matt gave me the plan that I use every time I sing." - Dan Kempson, Baritone (Metropolitan Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Pittsburgh Opera)
